Berhampore: Man from Bengal supplied explosives for 13/7 blasts

On August 05, 2011 Times of India reported that National Investigation Agency sleuths have arrested a man from Suti in Murshidabad district of West Bengal for allegedly supplying explosive-grade ammonium nitrate to the July 13 Mumbai serial blasts bombers. The local police had no clue to the operation until two NIA officers arrested Jiarat Sheikh from his village and produced him in court for transit remand. A Jangipur court granted the NIA a three-day transit remand to take Jiarat to Delhi for interrogation. Jiarat, in his early 30s, believed all long that he was dealing with two terror operatives, who would buy explosives in bulk. The NIA sleuths arrived in Murshidabad a few days ago, following a lead given by a suspect arrested earlier for the blasts that killed 26 people.

On July 06, 2011 Hindustan Times reported that a person tried to kill his wife on Tuesday afternoon at Kalkali village in Lalgola, Murshidabad. The woman is fighting for her life at Lalbag sub-divisional hospital. Police said Mamoni Sarkar (30), resident of Kalkali, married Rajesh Sarkar, a daily labour from Yashoitala eight years ago.

West Bengal: Hospital staff in trouble over cheating allegations

On June 03, 2011 Hindustan Times reported that a group D staff of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital has been accused of taking Rs. 400 from a patient’s relative to supply an injection on Thursday. Anarkoli Bibi has lodged a complaint with the hospital authorities against Hiralal Ram, who has denied the allegation. “A monkey bit my six-year-old daughter Barsha Khatun in the left hand on Sunday. We live at Fagupur village in Burdwan. We took her to the outpatient department of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital on Monday. The doctor prescribed an antirabies injection. He asked us to buy the injection from outside. A Group D staff, Hiralal Ram, came to us and asked for Rs. 400 for providing this injection. We gave him Rs. 200 but he did not provide the injection,“ Anarkoli told HT.

West Bengal: Youths attack MP’s residence – two detained

On May 30, 2011 Hindustan Times reported that Behrampore police detained two youths on Sunday for an “attack” on the house of Behrampore MP and Murshidabad district Congress president Adhir Chowdhury. District Congress spokesperson Asok Das said, “Today afternoon around 1, three youths on a motorcycle came to Adhir Chowdhury’s house `Chowdhury Villa’ at Gorabazar and tried to barge into the house after breaking open the main door.“ He said, “When security guards of the MP’s house and some other Congress supporters chased them, the driver of the bike fled towards Mohan cinema hall at high speed but the guards managed to nab two youths.”

West Bengal: Police arrests ASI’s son and friend over rape charges

On May 16, 2011 Hindustan Times reported that the police arrested son of a police ASI and his friend for their alleged involvement in raping a teenage beggar early on Sunday morning. Locals admitted the girl at Suri Sadar Hospital in a critical condition. Sources said that the 15-year-old girl used to beg at Suri bus stand. “On Saturday night the girl asked money from two youths in front of a tea stall. From there, those two men forced her inside a car,” said an eyewitness. After they left, locals started searching for the girl. Around 5.30 am on Sunday, the tea stall owner saw the two men return but without the girl. “We chased them and people started beating them up. They confessed that they raped the girl,” said a rickshaw puller at Suri bus stand.

West Bengal: Netai chargesheet against 20 CPM leaders

On April 5, 2011 Times of India reported that in a blow to the Left Front only two weeks before the assembly elections, the CBI on Monday charged 20 CPM leaders for the killing of nine villagers in Lalgarh’s Netai on January 7. Those named in the chargesheet include CPM’s Lalgarh zonal committee secretary Anuj Pandey, his cousin Dalim, Dharampur local committee secretary Chandi Karan, the Belatikri local committee secretary, and Sk Khalilluddin, a West Midnapore district committee member. All have been branded “absconders”.

Rampur: Six Maoist leaders successfully nabbed

On 27th December 2010, The Hindu reported that six top Maoist leaders were arrested in a raid by the police in Rampur area of Bihar’s Gaya district on Sunday. The arrested Maoist leaders were involved in the killing of a station house officer Mithilesh Prasad in Gaya and 45 other naxal related incidents in Bihar and Jharkhand.

West Bengal: House burgled in Salt Lake, cash and jewellery worth 10 lakh stolen

On October 19, 2010 the Times of India reported that the within days of a burglary in Salt Lake, the theft of cash and jewellery worth 10 lakh from a doctor couple’s house at HA Block was reported on Monday. Ajay Pal and his family were away on a holiday when the incident took place. “Upon returning home on Monday, we found the window grill cut. Burglars had broken the almirahs in the bedroom and taken away 1 lakh and jewellery worth 10 lakh,” said victim Chandrima Pal.

Jamshedpur: Prime accused held in Gyaneshwari Express derailment case

As published in the Lokmat, the Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested Bapi Mahato, one of the main accused in the May 28 Gyaneshwari Express derailment case, in Jamshedpur. He was arrested from Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district The CBI has recently announced a cash reward of Rs. 1 lakh for information on their whereabouts.

Maoists kill 21 jawans in West Bengal

Maoist leader Kishanji claimed responsibility for the attack almost immediately after it took place. “This is our Operation Peace Hunt against their Operation Green Hunt,” Kishanji told TOI. “This is our reply to Chidambaram and Buddhadeb. Steer clear of the jungles of Bengal, Orissa, Bihar and Jharkhand.”
