On May 16, 2012 Mumbai Mirror reported that one of Navi Mumbai’s most prominent builders, Vijay Gajra, and five of his associates escaped from the courtroom on Monday afternoon, barely minutes after they were sent to a two-week judicial custody. The six men are accused of largescale FSI violations in their 21-storey tower project. Shockingly, the cops who were supposed to take the accused to jail were busy with paperwork, and it took them at least 10 minutes to realise the six men had slipped away.

On May 16, 2012 The Pioneer reported that twenty days after a nude and highly decomposed body of a woman was found from the premises of Lok Nayak hospital in central Delhi, police have identified four persons in connection with murdering the woman. Three of them have been arrested on Tuesday, while one was still absconding. The identity of the woman is still not established.

On May 16, 2012 The Pioneer reported that the Delhi Government has unearthed an alleged land scam in which certain officials of the Revenue Department in ‘collusion’ with property dealers helped them in ‘grabbing’ Government land in various areas of east Delhi. Following an internal inquiry into the alleged scam, Chief Secretary PK Tripathi on Monday suspended three officials of the Revenue Department.

On May 16, 2012 DNA reported that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday arrested two persons red-handed allegedly accepting bribe, in two separate incidents. In the first incident, ACB nabbed Kailash Chand Pareekh, a second grade operator of Jaipur Dairy for taking a bribe of `13,000 from a packaging contractor in the office. The ACB also recovered the bribe money from him. ACB taking stock of the matter also seized his account and further started searching his house for more recovery.

Ashwinlalji Parmar, 35, picked up a fight with his wife Meena after suspecting her of infidelity. In a fit of rage, he bit off her nose. Till the last report came, Parmar was still absconding.

On May 16, 2012 Mid-Day reported that a 16-year-old deaf and dumb girl was gangraped by three men at knifepoint in Bhandup on Monday afternoon. All three of them were later arrested. According to the Bhandup police, the victim is a Std VIII student and lived with her family at Jamil Nagar, Bhandup (West). The incident occurred when the teen was playing outside her house. The three accused – Kallu Sureshchandra Jaiswal alias Shivkumar (23) and two other 16-year-olds – forcefully escorted the girl to Jaiswal’s home nearby and then raped her one by one at knifepoint.

On May 16, 2012 Times of India reported that on the day when police sub-inspectors (PSIs) and deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) were passing out at the Karai police academy, a complaint of dowry harassment was being filed at Vastrapur police station against one of the fresh graduates. In the complaint, a police inspector’s daughter Bhavna Desai, accused her husband a police sub-inspector Hiren Desai and his family members of physical and mental harassment for dowry. M R Sharma, Vastrapur police inspector, said, “We have registered Bhavna’s complaint.”

On May 15, 2012 Times of India reported that the traffic police have booked the man who banged his bike against another, killing 12-year-old H Shailaja on Sunday, on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The 21-year-old accused, V Suresh, was drunk at the time of the incident and has been booked under section 304 (II) of the Indian Penal Code, police said. “This is a nonbailable case and he will have to spend time in jail,” said a police officer from the Guindy traffic investigation wing.

On May 15, 2012 Times of India reported that a 22-year-old Australian woman was allegedly raped in Kasol village of Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh, by a man she knew as her Facebook friend. The girl, who came to India over a week ago, has lodged a criminal complaint with the Kullu police that a resident of Chandigarh, who she knew as Sammy Sidhana on the social networking site, raped her in a hotel room on Saturday night when she was ‘unconscious’ after attending a party.
