On April 26, 2011 Hindustan Times reported that a nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped her by her neighbour in Nihal Vihar, west Delhi. Police said the accused, Dinesh, allegedly raped the minor thrice since April 10. Police said the girl’s family initially chose to remain silent about the incident, citing social stigma. They mustered courage to inform the police only on April 23. Dinesh was living on rent, on the floor above the victim’s house. According to police, the victim, eldest of four siblings, was first assaulted on April 10.

On April 26, 2011 Times of India reported that three youngsters, including a college student, were arrested on Monday on charges of raping a 16-year-old girl. The accused allegedly forced the girl to drink beer and gang-raped her after she fell unconscious, the police said. C Karthik alias Karthikeyan, 20, and K Anbarasu, 19, drivers with the Pondicherry Co-operative Milk Producers Union, a co-operative society, and R Muthu alias Muthukumar, 20, a student of Tagore Arts College, befriended the girl, who was studying in computer training centre. The police said Karthikeyan with the help of his friends managed to convince the girl to visit his house when his family was not around on April 11. They forced her to drink beer and when she fell unconscious, they raped her, police said.

On April 26, 2011 Times of India reported that the Navi Mumbai crime branch recovered 32 stolen mobiles worth Rs 1.35 lakh from a 28-year-old man working as a waiter at a restaurant in Kalamboli. Deputy Commissioner of police (crime) D T Shinde said, “Our crime branch received a tip that the accused, Pradip Thapa, was involved in the recent break-in at a shop in Mahavir Plaza in Sector 5, Kalamboli. When we arrested Thapa, we recovered 32 cellphones along with their chargers and headsets.”

On April 25, 2011 Mid-Day reported that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested sacked Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organizing Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi in connection with his role in the AM Films and TSR scams. The arrest order was carried out after the CBI had questioned Kalmadi extensively on the two incidents, particularly on the documents relating to the two deals. The CBI had asked Kalmadi to appear before it on Monday to clarify some new issues which surfaced during the visit of the agency’s officials to London in connection with Queen’s Baton Relay scam.

On April 25, 2011 Times of India reported that a trial court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for strangling his brother-inlaw in a “planned and cold-blooded manner”. Noting that the accused, 25-year-old Ajeet, after killing his sister’s husband Suraj Mohan Dass on September 19, 2006, packed his body in an iron trunk to remove evidence from the spot, additional sessions judge said, “As the aggravating circumstances are concerned, it is evident that the murder of Dass was committed in a planned manner and in cold blood. Ajeet is sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for life for the offence under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.” “After murdering Dass, the convict had put his body in an iron trunk in order to cause disappearance of evidence of crime and to shield himself from legal punishment,” the court added.

On April 25, 2011 Times of India reported that two men from Solapur will spend three years in prison for a crime they committed about 20 years ago. The duo had beaten up their neighbour after his cattle entered their field. The neighbour died on the following day. The Bombay High Court on April 11, 2011 held Hanumant Chaudhari, 41, and Gautam Chaudhari, 54, guilty of voluntarily causing grievous hurt. Justice R C Chavan set aside the duo’s conviction of five years’ rigorous imprisonment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder but held them guilty of beating up the victim, which led to his death.

On April 22, 2011 Times of India reported that the southeast district police arrested a Supreme Court lawyer who allegedly murdered a UP police Special Operation Group (SOG) constable after the latter objected to the accused’s illicit relationship with his wife. The accused has been identified as Bharat Kumar Tomar (35). Cops arrested the accused, who had fled from Muzaffarnagar in UP, after committing the alleged murder on April 3.

On April 22, 2011 Ahmedabad Mirror reported that Maharashtra police with the help of Odhav police arrested a 22-year-old man for cheating. Purushottam Jeevabhai Chauhan alias Sheikh Pir Mohammed is accused of marrying Afsana (name changed), 20, from Bordave in Maharashtra by pretending to be a Muslim. Interestingly, Chauhan who had gone to Mumbai with the intention of finding a suitable bride was duped by his marriage broker. Chauhan later married Afsana with the help of a couple in Bordave. According to the police, Chauhan, a resident of Rabari Vasahat in Odhav was taken to Mumbai by a Maharashtrian broker who promised to introduce him to suitable brides. The duo travelled to Bordave in Maharashtra to meet prospective brides.

On April 22, 2011 Ahmedabad Mirror reported that Asar alias Alam Mustambhai Sheikh, 21, was sent to judicial custody by Urgent Metropolitan Judge J K Thakker on Thursday for sodomising a seven-year-old boy. Alam was arrested on Wednesday for having unnatural sex with his neighbour’s son. The accused is a resident of Johnnybhai ni Chawl. Alam is a native of Bihar and was living in Johnnybhai ni Chawl for eight months. He worked as an ice seller. According to the complaint filed by the child’s mother, Sahrinabanu Mohmmad Ibrahim Sheikh, the victim was playing outside his home when Alam covered the boy’s mouth and took him to his apartment. There, he sodomised the boy. Sahirnabanu who is a tailor was working in her house at the time.
