On May 15, 2012 Times of India reported that the college student who went missing from Ghola in North 24-Parganas on Friday was ‘rescued’ by police from Bandel railway station in Hooghly on Monday morning. Though one of the ‘abductors’ was arrested, police are not ruling out the possibility of the girl staging a drama to extract money from her father. Officers also suspect that the girl’s father – a transporter – knew the abductors and was aware of the plot.

On May 14, 2012 Times of India reported that the Chennai police on Sunday said they had arrested a 26-year-old engineer from Periamet, for the murder of Maduravoyal pawnbroker B Gunaram. The arrest of A Ramajayam alias Appu was made almost a month after the murder on April 14, when CCTV cameras recorded images of the killer, moments before he slashed the pawnbroker’s throat and fled with more than half a kilo of jewellery.

On May 14, 2012 Times of India reported that smuggling ration rice from Tamil Nadu to other states via lorries or vans and even trains is passe. In a first ever such incident, an Andhra Pradesh government-owned bus was impounded by the civil supplies CID police here on Saturday night for attempting to smuggle out about 2 tonnes of ration rice. No passenger was allowed to travel in the bus, which was on a regular interstate sortie, by the crew.

On May 14, 2012 Ahmedabad Mirror reported that more than Kalupur police have arrested three persons in connection with thefts. Faizal Kureshi (18), Imran Sheikh (23) and Junaid Sheikh (27), had reportedly broken locks of three shops in the area. Police said one of them, Faizal was caught after he fell down while trying to break into a house.

On May 11, 2012 Times of India reported that a National Commission for Protection of Child Rights team raided a home for minor girls in Haryana’s Rohtak Wednesday night and found inmates were regularly beaten, molested and made to work as labourers on farms and construction sites. The home is run by an NGO, Bharat Vikas Sangh that won the Haryana government’s Indira Gandhi Woman Empowerment Award in March carrying a cash prize of Rs1 lakh.

On May 10, 2012 Pune Mirror reported that the state unit of Prevention of Atrocities Against Women (PAW) housed in Pune has unearthed an international flesh trade ring in which minor girls were shipped to Gulf countries under false promises of being hired as domestic help. Investigations began when PAW authorities rescued nine girls from Nepal in January and February this year. A complaint against two suspects – Taufik Ahmad Ali Mulla Shah (37) and his assistant Firoz Mehboob Shaikh (32), both residents of Mumbai – was filed at the Mahatma Phule Police Station in Kalyan, near Mumbai, from whose jurisdiction the girls were rescued. The raids were conducted by PAW and Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU), Kalyan after receiving a tip off from International Justice Mission, an NGO.
