Jaipur: University suspends 2 professors for rape attempt

On June 30, 2011 Times of India reported that a day after the rape attempt on research scholar came into light, the vice-chancellor of Rajasthan University, B L Sharma, suspended both her guides – R K Singhal and S N Dholia – with immediate effect since one of them was arrested while other was named in the FIR lodged by the victim at Gandhi Nagar police station. On Tuesday Gandhi Nagar police have arrested Singhal, a professor of Physics for allegedly attempting rape and outraging the modesty of the girl pursuing PhD under him. The girl had named S N Dholia, the co guide in the FIR and police was ascertaining his role and had also questioned. University of Rajasthan has also formed a committee to investigate the whole matter.

Fatehabad: Father arrested for selling his daughter

On June 30, 2011 Times of India reported that a man from Haryana’s Fatehabad district allegedly sold his 16-year old daughter for Rs. 50,000 to a man to marry her though she was already engaged to another boy. The police rescued the girl and arrested her father following a complaint filed by her stepbrothers.

Chandigarh: City police suspends two cops

On June 30, 2011 The Pioneer reported that a day after The Pioneer carried a story on failure of cops in providing help to a girl in need, the city police suspended a Sub-Inspector and a Constable and ordered a departmental inquiry against them. The police department on Wednesday suspended Constable Kartar Singh for his lapse to do his duty and duty officer SI Rajinder Singh for lack of supervision and initiated a departmental inquiry against them.

Guntur: Pastor sexually abuses and kills a minor

On June 30, 2011 Times of India reported that in a gruesome act, a church pastor allegedly killed a minor girl after sexually abusing her at Nadendla village in Guntur district. The victim, who was allegedly set ablaze by the pastor on Tuesday, breathed her last at the government general hospital in Guntur on Wednesday. The accused, K Ajay Babu, was taken into custody. The 15-year-old girl, Naramalla Mounica, was working at the pastor’s residence as a domestic help for the last one year. Her farm labourer parents – N Prasada Rao and Rani – allowed their daughter to work at Babu’s residence as he had promised to fund her education. The girl had cleared the SSC examination this year with good marks. The pastor, who was deserted by his wife, allegedly raped the girl at his home a few months ago when she was alone.

Hyderabad: Two IPS officers grilled by CBI in a fake encounter case

On June 30, 2011 Times of India reported two Andhra Pradesh cadre IPS officers were grilled for about eight hours by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths on Wednesday in connection with the alleged fake encounter killing of Maoist leader Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad and journalist Hemchandra Pandey in the jungles of Adilabad in July last. Joint director CBI, Hyderabad Zone, V V Laxminarayana summoned Adilabad superintendent of police P Pramod Kumar and the then OSD Adilabad Sarvashresth Tripathi to the agency’s headquarter in Sultan Bazar. According to sources, the CBI officers recorded the statements of the two officers under Section 161 of the CrPC. However, it is not known what the officers told the CBI.

Hyderabad: Ex-home guard faces sexual exploitation charges

On June 30, 2011 Times of India reported that the Bowenpally police on Wednesday arrested a former home guard, Sambasiva, 27, for sexually-exploiting a 23-year-old girl. He worked as a home guard in the Bowenpally police station and lost his job in February. Bowenpally inspector G Srinivas said the home guard fell in love with the girl last year while on duty at a Ganesh pandal in Bapujinagar.

Puducherry: Parcel bomb killer held

On June 30, 2011 Times of India reported that Police in the Union territory arrested a 32-year-old man on Wednesday afternoon on charges of murdering a woman by sending her a parcel enclosing explosives for spurning his sexual advances. The arrested person was identified as D Arunagiri, 32, proprietor of a unit manufacturing candles, where the victim P Jyothi, 27 worked until last month. Police picked him up from his unit around 3pm on Wednesday suspecting his involvement in the crime. He confessed to sending a parcel with explosives and murdering the woman. Senior superintendent of police (law and order) VJ Chandran told reporters that Arunagiri decided to take revenge on the woman for refusing his repeated sexual advances.

Chennai: Engineer faces law over harassment charges

On June 30, 2011 Times of India reported that the suburban police on Wednesday arrested a 54-year-old engineer working in the Chennai port under the Tamil Nadu women’s harassment prevention act for assaulting his wife. The engineer had also hit his 10-year-old daughter with a stick, the police said. According to the police, V Mahadevan of Sakthi Nagar in Tirumullaivoyal lives with his wife M Shyamala, 32, daughter Shivani, 10, and mother in-law Viji Modi in Tirumullaivoyal. Shyamala married Mahadevan after she divorced her first husband. Shivani is a Class V student of a private matriculation school in Tirumullaivoyal. Mahadevan had been living separately in the first floor of the apartment after a feud with Shyamala that happened a few months ago. Shyamala has been living in the ground floor in the same house with her daughter.

Chennai: Toddler rescued from kidnapper’s net

On June 30, 2011 Times of India reported that the police on Wednesday rescued in Porur an 18-month-old boy from an autorickshaw driver, who allegedly bought the child from a woman for 50,000. The boy, Maniraj, went missing from his house in West Saidapet on June 16. Police believe that a woman, identified as Ilakkiyah, kidnapped the boy from his house. “We have narrowed down on Ilakkiyah, who kidnapped the child, and hope to nab her soon,” a senior police officer said. She was part of a larger child trafficking network, the police said.
