On April 29, 2011 Hindustan Times reported that a day after wheel-chair bound Champalal Jain, 58, was caught at the international airport for trying to smuggle in 45 high-end watches worth Rs 7 lakh, the customs authorities said they also found foreign liquor and cigarettes in his baggage. They authorities seized six bottles of Black Label and six cartons of Benson & Hedges cigarettes. Each carton holds 10 cigarette packs. Customs officials caught Jain on Tuesday morning after he arrived from Dubai at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport as was crossing the green channel after noticing the Rolex watch on his wrist.

On April 29, 2011 Pune Mirror reported that the Hivajinagar police arrested five men on Thursday for allegedly attacking and ransacking the Congress Bhavan on April 25. The suspects, according to city Congress officials are followers of Congress MLC Mohan Joshi. The five persons were produced before a city court on Thursday and were remanded in police custody till April 30. The police arrested former corporator Ayub Ismail Pathan (30) of Guruwar Peth, Arjun Waghmre (41) of Kondhwa, Pratik Nitin Gujarathi (19) of Shukrawar Peth (son of city Congressman Nitin Gujarathi), Prashant Vishnu Surase (31) of Hadapsar and Yogesh Ravindra Bhokare (30) of Kasba Peth.

On April 29, 2011 Times of India reported that Central Crime Branch officials arrested three men, who allegedly took loans of more than Rs 1 crore from various banks, in the name of a fake organization. H Krishnappa, 47, K N Krishnaswamy, 43, and N Narasimhaiah were taken into custody on Wednesday by CCB police. According to police, these men formed an association called Shree Shakthi Woman Self-Help Group, and using fake documents, photographs and seals, they availed of loans amounting to Rs 1crore and Rs 54 lakh.

On April 29, 2011 Times of India reported that financial crisis and dowry harassment, unable to cope with these twin problems, a woman and her two children allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a running train in Byappanahalli police limits early Thursday. The mangled bodies of J Lakshmamma, 50, her son J Gangadhara, 25, and daughter J Sumitra were found on the railway tracks near Srirampura gate, Jakkur, located behind Yelahanka railway station. The incident came to light around 9.30am when passing railway officials informed police.

On April 29, 2011 Times of India reported that an autorickshaw driver has been arrested on the charge of raping a 29-year-old woman between April 9 and April 26. The Hinjewadi police have identified the accused as Mahesh Patil alias Baban Sawant, 22, of Borhade Vasti in Moshi. The incident came to light when the victim, a labourer, lodged a complaint against Sawant with the Hinjewadi police station. Sub-inspector A S Wanjari of the Hinjewadi police station said the victim and the suspect were known to each other.

On April 29, 2011 Times of India reported that the a 32-year-old woman chased a youth for seven minutes on LBS Road in Vikhroli (W) and finally caught him after he tried to run away with her gold chain on Wednesday night. The Parksite police said, Sangeeta Sonawane was returning home when Lalit Dendoran, 22, made an attempt to snatch her gold chain. Instantly, she tried to grab Dendoran’s hand, who started running and jumped the road divider. Sonawane did not give up and started chasing Dendoran through the busy main road from Godrej Hill Site colony and finally caught him after a short chase. Considering Sonawane’s bravery deputy commissioner of police (zone 7) Sanjay Shintre felicitated her on Thursday at his Mulund office.

On April 29, 2011 Times of India reported that the Vakola police has filed a chargesheet against three persons in connection with the rape of a three-year-old girl at Kalina Education Society School in Santa Cruz. The security guard, Telam Singh, had allegedly raped the girl in the school premises. When the student complained to the teacher, Elison Miranda, she and a peon, Rekha Kamble, had allegedly threatened her not to tell anyone else about the incident. When the girl’s parents learnt about the incident they filed a complaint. The accused have been booked for rape and abetment.

On April 29, 2011 Times of India reported that a dentist from Bangalore who came to Mumbai for a surgery was allegedly molested by a ward boy at a private hospital in Goregaon (W) on Wednesday. The accused, Manoj Surve, was arrested within an hour of the incident. The victim told TOI that she complained to the hospital authorities but they took no action against Surve. The woman’s parents stay in the western suburbs, while she lives in Bangalore where she practises as a dentist.

On April 28, 2011 The Indian Express reported that the two persons were arrested in East Delhi for allegedly attempting to extort Rs. 1 crore from a prominent silver trader, police said on Wednesday. The accused, Rakesh and Mohd Yasin, were nabbed from Seelampur on Tuesday following investigations into a series of extortion calls received by the trader, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) I B Rani said. “The duo made at least 25 phone calls to the trader in the last two months to demand money,” she added. According to the trader, the accused threatened to kill his family members unless they paid ransom.
