On February 18, 2011 Times of India reported that the Bengal administration not only failed Rajib Das when he was fighting for his life, it also proved insensitive to the bereaved family in the aftermath. On Thursday, when police announced the first arrest in the case – two days after the murder – home secretary G D Gautama sought to play down the incident by saying that the prime motive for the assault on Rajib and Rinku “appeared to be snatching”. He also remarked that Rinku was a divorcee, without explaining how it is anyway connected to the case.
