On January 31, 2011 Mumbai Mirror reported that dressed in a tuxedo with a matching tie, clean shaven, hair gelled, sporting an expensive wristwatch and calmly surfing through various applications on his latest Blackberry, Yogesh Babulal Jaiswal alias Lala alias Hariom came across as a conventional highly paid corporate executive, and a responsible one at that, as he used to wait for paying his taxes at the M K Road Income-Tax office. Or that’s what the I-T officials thought.

Mumbai: CBI raids homes & offices of the Adarsh scam accused

On January 31, 2011 Mumbai Mirror reported that the Adarsh heat is singeing many not just in Mumbai but also in other parts of the country – as far as Madhubani in Bihar. The Central Bureau of Investigation raided several establishments associated with Adarsh society, and those accused in the scam, early on Sunday.

Mohali: Case registered against fraudster

On January 31, 2011 Hindustan Times reported that the police have registered a case against Gurmukh Singh Walia, owner of an immigration company, for a fraud of Rs 5.5 lakhs. Walia is brother of ex-councilor, SAS Nagar Municipal Council, Gurmeet Singh Walia. According to the police, the accused runs an immigration company, Royal Study Abroad Consultant, in Phase 7 of SAS Nagar. On August 11, last year Joginder Singh, resident of Balachaur in district Nawanshahr of Punjab, approached Walia to send his daughter to Australia for higher studies. Singh reportedly paid Rs 5.5 lakhs to the accused for this purpose.

Punjab: Man booked for raping a minor

On January 31, 2011 Hindustan Times reported that after being abducted, a minor was raped for nine days in her village and kept with cows. On Saturday, she broke free and reached her mother. Suspect Gurpreet Singh is from Manakpur Sharif village in Kurali.

Haryana: Special-school watchman arrested for rape

On January 31, 2011 Hindustan Times reported that a 17-year-old deaf and mute girl was allegedly raped at a state government-run special school in Karnal by the school watchman and two other employees. The accused, including the watchman (only identified as Ajay) of the Mata Parkash Kaur welfare centre for hearing and speech handicapped, have been arrested.

New Delhi: Self proclaimed king of robbers held in murder case

On January 31, 2011 Hindustan Times reported that a 31-year-old man, who calls himself the `badshah’ of snatchers and pickpockets operating in the city, was arrested from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh in connection with the murder of a 55-year-old man. The victim’s family members were allegedly insisting that Raju’s associate must marry their daughter as the two were in a relationship, police said on Sunday.

Uttar Pradesh: Couple held for murder

On January 31, 2011 Hindustan Times reported that a husband-wife duo has been arrested on Sunday for murdering a man and burying his body in their house on January 26 here in Loni. Police said victim Liley Singh (40) worked in a security agency in Ghaziabad and on the fateful day he had gone to his friend Mange Ram’s house in Bhup Khedi area of Loni. Singh went missing on January 26 and after a missing person’s complaint was lodged the police began investigating and it eventually led them to Mange Ram.

Kochi: Ice cream sex parlour scandal, duo booked

On January 31, 2011 Pioneer reported that the Kerala Police on Sunday registered a case against PK Kunhalikutty, former minister and general secretary of Indian Union Muslim League, a partner of the Congress-led UDF coalition, in connection with the infamous ice-cream parlour sex scandal. With this police action, based on a directive from the Home Department, the Congress-led coalition, which was so far tipped to win the next Assembly election, has been pushed into the defensive. The UDF is reported to have started efforts to launch a counter-offensive against the CPI (M)-led ruling LDF in order to get over the crisis.

Bhopal: Wanted maoist lady commander held

On January 31, 2011 Pioneer reported that a woman cadre of Naxals, carrying a reward of more than `1 lakh and wanted in more than 45 cases, including those of murder, arson and looting in Madhya Pradesh, was arrested on Sunday from the Lanji area in the Balaghat district, close to the Chhattisgarh border, the police said. Jhinia Pusam (32) was wanted for the murder of former MP Transport Minister Lakhiram Kaware in MP’s Balaghat district in 1999, the police said.

Coimbatore: Woman arrested for duping public of `3.27 cr

On January 31, 2011 Deccan Chronicle reported that the city police nabbed a 55-year-old woman for conning people to the tune of `3.27 crore by promising to get their money doubled and arrange for loans from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. According to the police, Gayathri, of Kalapatty, had duped nearly 40 people in Coimbatore and neighbouring districts by luring them with fake promises of doubling their money. She had also collected crores of rupees from several others with the promise of arranging money from the Prime Minister Relief Fund or getting loans through the self-help group scheme.
